Giatto & Weyanoke WV

Giatto and Weyanoke WV are less than half a mile apart.  Both were small coal towns owned by the Weyanoke Coal and Coke Company and the residents worked the same mines. Giatto was for the African-American miners and their families and Weyanoke was for the white workers and their families.  The divide was essentially which side of the railroad tracks you lived on.

Giatto is an unincorporated community in Mercer County, West Virginia, 1 mile west of Matoaka. The community was named after Giotto, an Italian artist, and was misspelled when the post office was established. The error was never corrected. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giatto,_West_Virginia)

Giatto lies off of Rt 10 on the N&W Right Fork of Widemouth Creek Branch. The Virginian line is to the left. (https://www.nwhs.org/convention/2013mullens/Princeton_to_Twin_Falls.pdf)

Weyanoke is an uncorporated community in Mercer County, West Virginia, on county route 11, 1 mile west of Matoaka. The company was named after the Weyanoke Indians by the local Weanoke Coal Company. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weyanoke,_West_Virginia)

In Weyanoke, the company store, school and superintendent’s house were north of the N&W track. This town also had a theater and there was a ball diamond south of the towns. (http://www.coalcampusa.com/sowv/flattop/mercer/mercer.htm)
