Modoc WV

Modoc mine and coal camp was located on Arista Mountain in Mercer County WV between the Right Fork of Widemouth Creek and Rich Creek at Wenonah. Three mines were mined by the Turkey Gap Coal and Coke Company on Pocahontus 3 seam, Modoc 1, Modoc 2 and Modoc 3. Latitude: 37° 28' 18". Longitude: 81° 15' 4". In 1920, the mines produced 97,014 tons of coal according the the West Virginia Dept. of Mines. In 1923, O. M. Knauff was mine superintendent. The mine was active in 1925 and used the Springton Post Office to receive mail. In 1995 the mine is operated by Consolidation Coal and operates in Mercer and Wyoming Counties. Mine operation and entrance appears to have moved to Wyoming County, and the coal town employees
