Springton coal camp was the property of Solvay Collieres from 1915-1922. In 1923 it was run by Kingston Pocahontas Coal Company until 1942. Common knowledge says the mine was worked out by the late 1930s. Along with the Smokeless camp, it was owned by the Semet-Solvey Division of Allied Chemical Corporation beginning in 1942. The coal and land were leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp., a division of Norfolk Southern Corp.

The company store contained the post office in the left front of the building. The store portion extended from front to rear of the building. Storage of supplies was on the top floor. The building had an elevator to get the supplies to the upper floor. A railroad siding allowed trains to deliver goods. The store had one of the two phones in the town. The other phone was located in the mine manager’s house. (http://www.coalcampusa.com/sowv/flattop/mercer/mercer.htm)
